The
rich diversity of cultural and spiritual influences on women in
the Bay Area are revealed in One World, Many Faiths, an exhibition
of multi-cultural altars by 20 female artists.
Women
are being featured in the exhibition because they have traditionally
been discounted in the major religions. The altar form has been
used in many cultures to honor that which holds reverence and meaning.
Each artist interprets that for herself.
Artists
include Faiza Ali, Suha Araj, Ann Belden, Melanie Bien, Terese Bravo,
Carla Caletti, Carol Cano, Wendy Cheng, Karen Caraway, Jan Eldridge,
Beth Grossman, Kay Kang, Corinne Innis, Amy Lam, Nikki Lastreto,
Jennifer Zenovia Limberakis, Patricia Rodriguez, Eleanor Ruckman,
Amy Tobin and ShadiYousefian.
Curated
by San Francisco Artist Carla Caletti, One World, Many Faiths
has been inspired in part by the climate of fear and racism that
is prevalent in our country. The intent of the show is to inspire
respect and acceptance for the worldwide diversity of religious
practices, spiritual paths and cultural stories. It is also about
honoring the value of connecting to what is important to each of
us individually.
Thank
you to the artists for their work and to SomARTS Gallery for their
support in providing us the Gallery. Also, thank you to all of the
people who believed this show was a worthy effort and helped bring
it into form.
